Because of its prime location just 25 miles north of San Diego, Encinitas property values are high because of its atmosphere of small-town living with big-city access. Encinitas was incorporated in 1986, a compilation of five communities: Leucadia, Cardiff-by-the-Sea, Olivenhain, and old and new Encinitas. The city has a rich heritage of Native American tribes such as the San Dieguitos, the LaJollans, and the Dieguenos, and Spanish explorers, who named the city for the “hills of live oaks” that were found there. In the 1800's, Encinitas experienced its share of the gold rush, and in the early 1900's the La Paloma Theatre became the first “talking” theatre in the rural United States. Encinitas was once known as The Flower Capital of the World, and is where the Ecke poinsettia was introduced in 1923.
Homebuyers who choose Encinitas as their home will enjoy the award-winning Encinitas Union School District with nine elementary schools, two of which are National Blue Ribbon Schools, and all of which are California Distinguished Schools. The District also contains four high schools and two middle schools. There are also many private schools to choose from, ranging in size from sixteen to 277 students.
